Our Governors

What does the Governing Body do and why?

At Springfield Lower School, Governors work with staff to support the aims and objectives of the school. We are made up of men and women from many different backgrounds who are able to contribute their time, expertise and interests to support the school in developing the learning of every one of our pupils, develop our staff and support our parents and carers. Our current Chair of Governors is Darren Gibbons and our Vice Chair is Ann Robertson.

We work with the Headteacher and staff group to ensure the best possible education for each individual pupil is being provided, within the schools budget and in accordance with local requirements and national legislation. The school is led and managed on a day to day basis by the Headteacher and her team of education professionals therefore our role is to ensure the effective management of the school by working in close partnership with the Headteacher to achieve continual progress through challenge and support.

How is the Governing Body Formed?

The Governing Body is made up of voluntary representatives from parents and carers, the staff group and members from the local community.

The current constitution for Springfield Lower School, as per the Instrument of Government made by the order of Bedford Borough Council on the 13th May 2015, is that it should consist of: 4 Parent Governors (chosen from parents of school pupils), 1 Local Authority appointed Governor,  1 Headteacher, 1 Staff Governor, 4 Co-opted Governors (suitable members of the community appointed by the governing body).

When does the Governing Body meet?

A full Governing Body meeting is held at least once a term. We all belong to one of two committees which also meet at least once a term and some of us also have specific responsibilities such as Safeguarding (Safeguarding Governor Anna Goddard), Health & Safety and Pupil Premium. In order to undertake our roles training is provided by the local authority.

Why are there two additional committees?

The two additional committees ensure that specific areas of the school can be discussed with the Headteacher in detail and reported back to the full Governing Body. Reports will also be provided to each committee by education specialists in the school and Governors will also undertake their own reviews of practice and outcomes which are discussed with school staff and the full Governing Body.

The Standards Committee deals with all matters to do with the curriculum the school follows, pupil target setting, progress monitoring and classroom activities. It's current membership is: Marianne Allen, Kim Davenport, Aleksandra Leska, Ann Robertson and Mark Williams.

The Finance and Personnel Committee deals with financial and staffing matters any projects relating to the school grounds and buildings. Its current membership is: Darren Gibbons, Marianne Allen, Michelle Barnes, Carl Meader, and Ann Robertson.

We also have a newly formed Governor School Improvement Group which will begin meeting in September.
